All About Fishing Tackle- Expand Your Fishing Knowledge
Fishing is one of the most ancient practices on this earth, dating back to as early as the Paleolithic period. Though the term fishing actually refers to the act of catching fish in the water bodies, even the practice of catching other aquatic animals like mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans etc. is usually regarded as fishing.
For many countries especially those having long, broken coastline such as the countries of Western Europe, fishing is one of the leading occupations of the people. In these countries fishing is practiced in a large scale and is of commercial type. The livelihoods of the people largely depend on fishing. In commercial fishing, large vessels are employed which can use larger nets.
Acoustic fish finders, radars, position finders and other much expensive modern equipments are used to track don fish. Generally there are four methods by which modern commercial fishing vessels catch fish. These are Drifting, Trawling, Seining and Lining.
Drifting nets are used to catch pelagic fish by hanging the net vertically just a few meters below the water surface where the fish will swim into the net. Trawling, on the other hand involves fishing by using a huge bag like net whose mouth is kept open by head beams.
The trawling net usually goes deep underneath and has proved to be the most effective method of catching demersal fish. Besides marine fishing, fishing in rivers, lakes and other inland water bodies has also become commercial in character. The salt water fish and sweet water fish have distinct characteristics of their own and each has its own market.
With the invention of modern fishing equipments, commercial fishing has become very popular and is a high profit making business today. But apart from large scale commercial fishing, traditional small scale fishing and recreational fishing are also popular among many people.
Traditional fishing practices include fishing in a small scale with traditional tools and instruments like fishing rods, fishing tackles, arrows, harpoons, throw nets, drag nets, etc.
This type of fishing is practiced by individual fisherman and is of subsistence type. On the other hand recreational fishing is a type of fishing mainly practiced for pleasure. This type of fishing has almost no commercial value. Some people having a knack for fishing, often treat is as an amusement.
However, this type of fishing has to abide by certain rules and maintain licensing restrictions. The most popular forms of recreational fishing are done with the help of fishing rods, hooks, reel, line and a variety of baits. The process of catching fish by using hooks is known as angling and it is a common method used in recreational fishing.
On the other hand the term Fishing Tackle refers to any equipment that the fisherman uses while fishing. Fishing has always been a popular practice among men and with all the new techniques and equipments, its popularity is steadily increasing over the years!
Fishing tackle is as varied as the fish we’re trying to catch. Having a wide selection of fishing lures and terminal tackle will ensure that you have the right supplies for the conditions and terrain you may come across.

Things To Know About Fly Fishing!

Things To Know About Fly Fishing!
Fly fishing is one of those sports where you get out what you put in.
If you put in a genuine effort you will get lots of fun and excitement from the sport.
Anyone who takes up fly fishing must have patience, be willing to practice their cast and be willing to learn about their chosen sport.
You must be willing to learn new ideas and practice them, but not keep switching from one to another. Anyone doing this will not perfect anything, always changing one idea for another and not allowing to get anything right. The ones with knowledge about their tackle, the place they are fishing at and the fish they are trying to catch will have much more success than those who just turn up not knowing anything of what they are trying to do.
There are more than 10,000 different types of flies and to find the best one for the job can be trial and error. As a rule you use bright flies on a sunny day and dark coloured flies on a cloudy or overcast day.
The green butt skunk fly is mainly black with a bright green piece of yarn, these flies are used a lot for Salmon but also used around the world with good effect.
The jock scott is one of the best flies for most seasons and waters. This delicate fishing fly can take hours to make with lots of different materials involved.
The thunder and lightening is a deep orange, gold, brown and black, perfect for cloudy or dark days and cloudy waters. This is one of the most popular fishing flies for catching salmon today. These are just a few of the most popular fishing flies used but you do not have to stick with these, if you find a fly that works for you then great.
Dry fly fishing is when you cast your fly to a predetermined spot on the water and try to get the fish to attack the fly, but also trying to strike before the fish spits the fly back out.
Wet fly fishing lets the fly sink just under the surface and pass by the fish causing the fish to strike at the fly. The most common fish to catch with a fly are salmon, trout and most fresh water fish.
Below are some of the terms associated with fly fishing which may help you understand?
Pool an area of water where it is fast flowing and entering a deeper pool of water.
It offers good prospects of a variety of fish in the area where the water flows in.
Riffle an area where the fast flowing water is broken up by some solid object in the water, the area just behind the object in the water is often good as insects will settle here and so will the fish.
Dead water is as the name implies, very still with no current and not usually a good place to fish.
Some of the other places to find fish is where there is a shady area or vegetation growing out of the water.

Discus fish disease risks – Want To Know More About Discus Fish
Native from the Amazon River, yet successfully bred all over the world in aquariums, discus fish are not too fragile or sensitive creatures. However, all breeders should be aware of the risks of discus fish disease, as they are often exposed to various health problems because of improper care conditions. Saying that breeders are most often the ones responsible for the discus fish diseases doesn’t mean we’re pointing the finger, this is the truth. Improper care, poor or inadequate living conditions, co-inhabitance with other breeds are usually responsible for the various discus fish diseases.
The most common discus fish diseases are the ones common to fresh water fish in general. For instance the ammonia poisoning is a discus fish disease that appears because of improper nitrogen cycle in your aquarium. Don’t add tropical fish in the water until the ammonia has been eliminated in the water, and maybe the filters don’t function properly. In order to avoid this discus fish disease, change the water regularly and avoid over-crowding the tank. The symptoms of this discus fish disease include red and swollen gills and the fish staying at the water surface gasping for air.
Another discus fish disease that results from poor water quality is the Ich or the white spot characterized by the appearance of white spots on the fish body and fins. The best way to fight this discus fish disease is by increasing the water temperature and administrating medication available in any pet store. Before adding the medication for this type of discus fish disease, take the carbon filter out as this may absorb all the useful substances. In case you want to bring other fish to the tank, make sure you use a quarantine aquarium in order to prevent any discus fish disease.
If the water temperature is not appropriate you expose your pets to another discus fish disease such as the oxygen starvation. A higher water temperature also requires an increased level of oxygen in the water. Therefore, you can easily avoid this discus fish disease by taking care of the aeration level, speeding up the flow rate of the filters. You may want to turn off the tank light for a while, as this also causes temperature to rise and exposes the fish to the risk of the oxygen starvation discus fish disease. All in all, keep in mind that the proper temperature for the discus fish is 31 degrees Celsius at the maximum.

What You Need To Know about Saltwater Fishing Gear

What You Need To Know about Saltwater Fishing Gear
Saltwater fishing gear has a different job to do over the other types of fishing gear on the market. When you walk into your favorite fishing shop or you look at the ads on the web, it pays to know what you are looking for and why that is the best choice. For those venturing out into the world of saltwater fishing, it is essential that with you comes the very best equipment for the job. There are several things to think about purchasing and each should be designed to accommodate the harsh conditions that saltwater brings to you and to your gear over time.
Perhaps the most consistent questions and the first thing to think about when considering saltwater fishing, is gear. Knowing what equipment to select really can make a difference in the successfulness of your fishing. One great rule of thumb is to get educated before you buy. Research online, shop around, and consider renting from a charter or rental service, at least initially, to help defray the start up costs of saltwater fishing and allow you to find a perfect match before making the substantial investment that comes with saltwater fishing.
Basically, you just need bigger, more heavy duty equipment when saltwater fishing. You also need to be meticulous about equipment maintenance when saltwater fishing. Fishing equipment for saltwater usage needs to be built for the job otherwise it will not be able to handle it.
Most tackle manufacturers consistently sell more five or eight weight rods in nine foot lengths than any other. There is a reason for this. If you are fishing for anything other than the largest game fish, these rods will pretty much do the deed for you, depending on conditions and the type of fish for which you are fishing. If you are fishing for something like speckled trout in a bay like setting where waters are relatively calm, a five weight rod will work quite well. If you are fishing in grass flats or surf areas where conditions are much windier, an eight weight will provide the substance you need for such conditions. Still, if you can only choose one rod, you might want to consider a set up such as a “Salt-6″ Recently manufacturers have made great six weight rods that have hardware specially for salt water fishing. With fighting butts and this special hardware, a salt six is a great choice.
When it comes to reels for saltwater fishing, it is important to note that they do not have to be fancy or sophisticated, but since salt is very corrosive, they must be made of appropriate materials such as corrosion resistant parts that are easy to keep clean with consistent rinsing and care. As a general rule, if you can choose only one reel, if you choose a single action reel that is andonized, has a disc drag, and can carry in the neighborhood of one to two hundred yards of backing, you should be happy with your choices.
For fishing the salt flats and bays, nothing works better than a weight forward floating line. If you are fishing in the surf, you might be happier using a slow sinking line to help keep your fly below the choppiness of the water and keep your line from being dragged all over the place by the surf.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Are You Excited About Bass Fishing
Bass fishing is the exciting sport of angling for and outsmarting the North American gamefish known as bass. There are many species of bass.
This challenging sport is so popular that fishing shows and competitions all over the world offer large sums of prize money to the tournament winner.
Bass fishing is the gift that keeps on giving. Today the number of people who are engaged in this challenging and exciting activity is more than the number of people pursuing golf or tennis.
Baits/Lures
If bass fishing interests you, then researching baits and lures that attract them is highly recommended. The amount of effort alone in finding the best combination of bait and lure, is both a vocation and a hobby for bass fishermen.
Understand that having first decided which particular type of Bass you are trying to catch, you can then decide on the appropriate bait and tackle.
It is great fun catching the fish and picking the lures to use. You can choose from a large variety of lures and after you catch a certain amount of fish, you can unlock new special lures.
Colorful lures are used along with other tools to attract bass. Some even use unconventional fishing baits like adding peanut butter or some other type of food to their lures just to capture the largest fish in a particular lake.
Your rods, reels, lines and lures will vary depending on the environment, the nature of the particular species, and your skill level. Bass fishing is both a strategic sporting event as well as an art, and choosing the correct lures to use based on fish behavior, seasonal movements, water conditions and temperature is critical for success.
As time went on, new fly patterns were specifically developed to fish for bass, as well as heavier spinner/fly lures that could be cast by the baitcasting and fixed-spool casting reels and rods available at the time.
Conclusion
Bass fishing is both a strategic sporting event as well as an art, and choosing the correct bass fishing lures to use based on fish behavior, seasonal movements, water conditions and temperature is critical for success.
I’ll repeat what I stated earler – Bass fishing is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s hard to imagine any sport that is more enjoyable.
It can involve wonderful family experiences. It can bond fathers/mothers with sons and daughters. It can enrich your marriage. Of course, the key to that is the proper attitude and the desire for family involvement. But, it provides great opportunity.
You should know that bass fishing is very addictive because it is highly enjoyable and definitely rewarding regardless of your experience level.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – The Truth about Salt Water Aquarium Filters
When you set up a salt water aquarium filter then you will find that lots of things are involved in this. You will need various gadgets like a heater or a filter and also a test kit. You need all this if you want to maintain your salt water aquarium.
As everyone knows, fish are like normal human being, they eat and they pass out waste substances. Then through the process of nature, this waste turns into bacteria. Hence you need salt water aquarium filters if you want to clean out these germs. They also help you to get rid of elements which make the water dirty and hence they keep the entire aquarium safe for your pets.
When it comes to this filter you have two main types, the first is the external filtration system and the send one is called the internal one. You will find these filters at any sort of fish shop. But then the local pet shops usually don’t have these. Sometimes, even if they do they don’t have good quality ones.
So try and get them from the specialized shops. Now you should know a few things about these salt water aquarium filters before you buy them. Let’s start with the internal filters. Now these are basically used in those tanks where you have an internal tube. This tube is going to connect the water from the main tank to a sump tank which is present below.
The sump tank will be situated just below your main tank. The water in the fish tank will also be made to pass through a foam type thing. This foam will stop all types of bacteria and also unhealthy germs from getting accumulated. This way you can also filter the water.
After this the water will finally be pumped back into the main aquarium which is situated on the top. Now you will see that this process is a continuous one. The only defect of this system is that it is very noisy but then when it comes to effectiveness, it is very effective.
Then we have the external filter which is the most effective salt water filter available in the market. But then it also comes with a price tag. It is the most expensive one which is available as well.
But then the amount of money which you pay for this is actually worth it. This is something which is placed outside of your fish tank and it is just like the internal filtration system. Here there is a long black tube which is the filter and it is very silent and barely makes any noise and it is also very effective.

The Truth About Fresh-Water Game Fish

The Truth About Fresh-Water Game Fish
Whether you’re a beginner or an old-timer a worm-dunker, plug-tosser or a dry-fly puritan you’ll want to know many things to get the most out of your fishing. Here in plain fish-talk is the low-down about Largemouth Black Bass so you can’t miss.
Largemouth Black Bass
This big fresh-water tacklebuster is a favorite of anglers because of his savagery when he attacks a lure, and because of his head-shaking, leaping battle when hooked. Due to transplanting, he now can be found in ponds, lakes and rivers throughout the United States, and even in Canada, Mexico, Germany, Spain, France and Africa. His general color is greenish-bronze on the back, a lighter green on the sides, and yellow-white on the belly.
The easiest time to catch him is at daybreak and dusk; the best place is close to shore, especially near lily pads, underwater rocky lairs and large surface snags such as fallen trees.
He enters this shallow water during the night to hunt for minnows and fry (young fish), night-crawlers that may have slipped off the bank, frogs, lizards, field mice and, in fact, any living thing that can fit into his cavernous mouth, which is large enough to hold another fish two-thirds his own size. Bass have been known to gobble baby ducks, and even to try to swallow one of the parents!
Under these conditions, any of the above natural foods can be used to catch him. But none of them is necessary. When Bass are feeding at sunup and sundown, they’ll grab almost anything. So, use artificial lures. The lures that “swim” on the surface or just below it are the best since they aren’t likely to get “hung up,” or snagged, on bottom grass or rocks.
Besides, the strike of a Bass at a surface lure is spectacular, a thrill you’ll long remember. You don’t need a leader to connect your line to the lure. Tie the line to it directly or attach it with a small snap-swivel. Use bait-casting or medium-weight spinning tackle and nylon line of at least 8-pound-test (breaking strength).
Shortly after daybreak, as the sun begins to warm the shallows, the Largemouth Bass stops feeding and moves to deeper water, not returning until late evening when he works his way shoreward again for his nightly hunt for food. Bass fishing during the day, when the sun is high and the Bass are deep, usually mystifies anglers. They don’t know how to find Bass in deep water! And even when they find them, they can’t get them to strike!
“The Bass aren’t feeding,” is the old excuse. Maybe so, but if the only Bass caught were those that were feeding, there would be many more empty stringers. Catching a feeding Bass at dawn or dusk is comparatively easy; catching a non-feeding Bass at midday can be almost as easy – if you remember (1) he’s the biggest bully in the lake, and (2) it’s easy to get him to prove it!
To find Bass in deep water, first find a submerged weed bed. The Bass will be hiding in it. To find the weed bed, drag a treble-hook on a line-and-sinker from the rear of your boat until it snags fresh weeds. Then back off to within casting distance, anchor your boat, and cast to the weed bed with a deep-swimming lure.
Maybe the first few times he’ll let the “cripple” swim by. Keep casting to the same spot, retrieving the plug in sharp jerks to simulate injury even more authentically. Every time he sees this teaser stagger past his nose, he’ll fin a little faster. Eventually, the bully in him takes over. He comes in a rush – and you’ve a fight on your hands.
Remember, when there doesn’t seem to be a sign of a Bass anywhere, go to deep water over a weed bed with a red-and-white plug or a red-and-silver spoon. Add a sinker to the line ahead of it to sink it deeper, if necessary. Give it lots of “wounded” action, and cast at least a dozen times to the same spot before shifting to a new one a few yards to the right or left. If you don’t get a Largemouth then, it will be because there aren’t any left in the lake!

All About Salt Water Fish Tanks
Saltwater fish tanks not only helps you analyze the underwater ecosystem, it can also relieve you of stress and stand as a relaxing experience. In setting up a Salt Water Fish Tank at home, there are several factors you need to consider.
There are factors to consider in salt water fish tanks besides the temperature. Even though the ecosystem works properly, these tanks should always be monitored. Parameters are read this way:
- pH: 8.2
- Nitrates: 20 ppm for salt water fish/5 ppm for invertebrates
- Salinity/Specific Gravity measurement: 77F or 25C with a corrected hydrometer: 1.022
- Temperature: 77F or 25C
- Alkalinity: 3.0
- Reef keepers and invertebrates calcium: 400 – 450 ppm Ca++
Keeping a salt water fish tank is a rewarding experience. Re-creating an ocean environment at home is relaxing. When you are new in fish keeping, you can begin with having a freshwater tank.
Freshwater fishes are adaptable since they come from smaller bodies of water. They can tolerate mistakes better than salt water fishes. When you already know basic fish keeping you can move to keeping salt water fish tanks.
Always remember that you cannot combine the fresh water fish and the salt water fish in one tank. Freshwater fishes will die in salt water and vice versa.
Remember also that it is easier to keep the ecosystem stable when the tank is bigger. This principle is applicable to every water parameter. Larger tanks are better. Salt water tanks of bigger capacity supports 50% fewer fish as compared to freshwater counterparts. A 114 liter salt water tank can stock only a few small fishes.
You will find lots of resources that will help you along the way, once you are ready to maintain a salt water fish tank. Hence, nothing is more fundamental to humankind than the ocean. Keeping it at home, although it is artificial, is a thrilling gift that is worth the price.
Tips for making great tank starter fish selections
During the cycling process, never buy as well as bring in sensitive corals or invertebrates into your tank.
In selecting starter fishes and other livestock, have a list. Learn about their characteristics, nutritional requirements, feeding routine and captivity details.
By knowing the measurement of the fishes per tank rule, you will then have a broad idea on how many fish you can add.
Choose cheaper, durable, adaptable fish that are known to do well during the process of tank cycling. Some of the best fishes to start are:
- Damsels or
- Chromis
These fishes are very aggressive but once the tank has cycled and has been running for a month, you can start trading them. You can also change them with more stylish beginner fishes.
Be knowledgeable in inspecting what fish you can buy. The quality of health they have will play a vital role in successfully caring for them.
Salt water fish tanks act as an aquarium. It imitates the environment of an ocean. In imitating the ocean environment, it supports salt water fishes. Although a salt water fish tank is more difficult to maintain as compared to fresh water tanks, salt water fishes have less tolerance for fluctuations. Fluctuations happen within closed environments of the aquarium.
Once the aquarium is set properly, it operates with self-supporting ecosystems. Hence, the element in artificial or natural ecosystem relies on other elements for stability.
Thus, fish keeping has become a balancing step in monitoring and maintaining specific parameters. This is to keep the whole system stable. Although the system is critical for salt water fish tanks because the ocean is a stable environment, life forms in the ocean do not have the physical capability to adjust to radical changes quickly. Changes in the ocean only happen gradually.
