3 Categories Of Aquarium Fish – How To Keep Them Healthy

When you wish to look after fish you need to relate to them just as you would with any pet. You can keep fresh water and salt water fish tanks, and fresh water can further be divided into tropical or cold waters. Here are a few types of fish and tips on looking after them -

1. Pantodontidae
This category contains the two types of fish called the butterfly fish, and the flying fish. They belong to the western parts of Africa and can grow up to four inches. The butterfly variety has a small body which is flat and colored with wonderful designs, and hence the name. The tropical variety has a flat body with a tapering snout. It belongs to the Chaetodontidae family, and that is Latin for Pantodontidae. These could also be boat shaped with the snouts turning upward. The wing like chests are sometimes called the pectorals. Some have brownish tones on the body, and others have greenish ones. They also have streaks and dark spots of the same colors at times. They are quite passive in general and it is recommended you keep them with their own kind. These fish will not feed from the bottom of the aquarium. They will gladly eat smaller varieties of fish such as minnows, and maybe insects. You can even get them used to eating meat or worms. A long stick will help you train them to eat worms. The fish loves a temperate sift water climate with about 80 degrees on the temperature scales. Keep them in a tank half filled with water and make sure they have enough plants around them. These fish are not very easy to mate, so if that is what you are looking to do maybe you should start with a different variety. When you have to mate these, just make sure the hatchlings have insects to feed on soon after birth. Their eggs normall hatch in 3 days.

2. Mormyridae
They are usually captured in African pools. Their body to brain weight ratio is comparable to human beings. They actually have a sense of humor and very intelligent, so you can teach them a lot. When you buy this variety of fish just make sure you keep them on a monitored diet, in the absence of which they simply stop eating altogether. They are also called the electric fish. It is also called trunkfish. They have silvery brown bodies and are a pleasure to have in any aquarium.

3. Gnathonemus Petersi
This is the elephant nose fish. They grow to around four inches in length and belong to the Congo or Cameroon areas of Africa. They can grow up to nine inches in their natural habitat, but not so much in aquariums. It is colored dark brown or black with white streaks on the sides. They enjoy eating fresh water fleas.

Aquarium Maintenance And Fish Care – Simple Tips For Aquarium Owners

Internet forums and pet shops are the best places to get precise information about fishes that breed in freshwater and fishes that breed in saltwater. The tropical fish and the coldwater fish constitute as freshwater fish. Marine fish consists of salt water fish. There are 22,000 and more species of aquarium fish. The freshwater fish and saltwater fish require totally different conditions, water temperatures, feed, and pH levels.

The freshwater fish and the saltwater fish are basically amphibians and reptiles. Experts related to this field generally blend a different selection of these fishes. They might even go to the extent of adding Cushion Stars to their tanks. Cushion star is generally classified as Phylum Echinodermata. These fishes generally survive in the Mediterranean or in Adriatic areas. Starfish grows up to 1 ½ to 2 inches. It has arms that are shaped like short stars. These types of fishes have a yellow layer in the bottom region and green color in the upper region. This fish feels comfortable around coastal waters, as there are many stones there, to keep its skin covered all the time. Cushion Star enjoys waters that are really warm. The preferred temperature is 77 degrees, in Fahrenheit scale. The starfish eat organic matters off.

Wartlets can be classified in a series of categories, and subcategories. This fish hails from Mediterranean, but it has adapted itself to other sea areas. This fish’s main food is plankton. Rocky areas are its favorite, because of the hideous nature. It prefers staying in water that is about 71 degrees in the Fahrenheit scale. It normally grows up to 2 ½ to 3 inches.

Red-tailed Black Shark fish:
This fish has its origin from Thailand. It grows up to 4 ½ inches. This fish is basically torpedo shaped and resembles a flag. It is more or less velvety black, and its tail has a red tint. This fish is friendly in nature, so he makes a good local aquarium fish. The mouth of this fish is somewhat like a shape of sucker, so, he is often referred to as sucker. Clean water, grass and plants is all that he needs.

Yet another favorite of the expert aquarists are Helmet Shell Fish. These are majorly seen in the Mediterranean areas. They survive best in 71 degrees on the Fahrenheit scale. They basically live really close to the bottom of the waters, filled with sand and mud. This creature is a carnivorous species. He feasts on mollusks, that too on smaller breeds. Helmet Shell Fish is basically a nocturnal.

Cerianthus Membranaceus is a creature that resides around the Mediterranean areas. The surrounding seas play the role of their home. This creature has white tentacles that are narrowed and they have a crown. This fish’s body is somewhat shaped like a worm. It grows to nearly 12 inches. It is best to stay in 60 degrees for this creature, in Fahrenheit scale. This creature likes to feed itself with plankton.

Dried animal food stuff also becomes a feast for the aquarium fish. But it is necessary to feed them with plankton. This creature often prefers the solitary confinement.
Experts’ love sea squirts. They look really cool with the reddish orange tint, which is quite unusual for a sea creature. They basically reside in dark cavities. The ideal temperature for them is about 68 degrees to 71 degrees, in Fahrenheit scale.

The tubeworms are really nice creatures that can be found in the aquariums. Tubeworms produce some sort of firework caption when erected. The internet forums and the local library have a lot more information about this creature.

Aquarium Discus Fish – Important Tips To Remember

Aquarium Discus Fish – Important Tips To Remember

Aquarium Discus Fish

Discus fish in my opinion are the most beautiful fresh water fish you can keep. Now I know some people might say cichlids or clown loaches however it’s not the point. With their beauty comes a price. Discus can cost in upwards of 300 dollars a fish. Yeah I know it sounds crazy and I would never pay or recommend someone pay such a price for a fish. However where I’m from in Michigan you can expect to pay around 45 bucks for a juvenile and up to 100 bucks for a full sized adult. Even though these prices are high, by following these careful tips you will be on your way to keeping a beautiful Discus aquarium.

Aquarium Discus Fish – First Tip

The first tip I would like to touch on is aquarium balance. When I say aquarium balance I am talking about the amount of fish you should maintain in a single tank. The safest rule to abide by is to only keep one discus per ever ten gallons of tank water. Discus like their space so use this rule to keep your fish happy and they won’t feel crowded.

Aquarium Discus Fish – Second Tip

Tank size and shape is the second parameter to consider. Discus prefer a tall sized tank. What do I mean by tall? You want to try to get a tank which is taller that longer. Say for instance if you had a tank which was 6 feet long and only 18 inches deep you would be better off trying to find a 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide aquarium. With this being said if you have a good size tank like the first one I mentioned. I don’t suggest you run out and purchase a new tank. These are just tank guidelines they are not gospel however as a rule you do want to have at least an 18″ tank depth. I personally don’t recommend anything smaller that a 35 gallon tank. This is just my personal opinion. I don’t like to use anything smaller that 35 galls because the smaller the tank the harder it is to maintain the water. Plus I like to keep more than two fish in one tank.

Aquarium Discus Fish – Third Tip

Feeding is the third tip to abide by. Discus are set in their ways. Upon bringing your new discus home ask the breeder what type of fish they are accustomed too. Discus do not have any special diets however they do not like rapid food changes. To change their diet feed them the new food in small doses. Slightly increase their dosage for about a couple of weeks. This is a safe and stress free way to change their diet.

Aquarium Discus Fish – Fourth Tip

The fourth tip in this series is one of the most important tips you need to know. This is about water quality. Keeping your water chemistry clean and stable is a MUST! First you need to keep the water clean by making sure you change it when needed. Now Let me elaborate on chemistry. Proper water temperature for discus is between 82 and 86 degrees F. You also need to test the water hardness. The water should be soft, between 3 and 15dH. The PH level is next important factor. This needs to be between 5 and 6.5. PH id probably the biggest factor which most fish keepers have some trouble with. Discus do not like to compromise these PH factors. They will survive in other PH conditions however do not fool yourself in doing so. The fish may live and even will breed, The problem is they will always be stressed and their life span will be compromised. The bottom line is always test your water conditions and make very gradual changes when need be. When you make drastic chemistry changes this puts more harm than good on the fish causing them an abundance of stress.

Aquarium Fish Care Tips – Different Varieties Revealed

Markets are a resource of a variety of fishes including the freshwater, coldwater and tropical fishes. Apart from these one can also find the saltwater and Seawater fishes. People who have written about fishes have pointed out to the saltwater fish also called the damsels as a species which are one of the top starter fishes. What they must know is that there are around 22000 species of fishes suitable for the fish tanks and some of these fishes are ideal for starters even more so than those damsels. It takes more effort in maintaining salt water fishes. water conditions and feeding patterns have to be carefully monitored. In order to settle on the ideal fish for starters one has to learn about fishes in general. In this article, we will look into fresh water fish even as we know starters are nicer with coldwater and freshwater fishes.

Shark fish which is black in colour and has a red tail is called Labeo Bicolor. Thailand is the home of this fish which grows to a maximum of 4.5 inches. Labeo Bicolor is shaped like a torpedo and is vary popular because of the way it looks. Just like the shark, this fish has a dorsal which looks like a flag and complements its silvery colour. This fish which is black in colour feels velvety and has a red tail which gives it a different look. This fish is not suited to be kept in tanks as known from one of its traits. One such trait is the yellow and orange caudal fins. This fish is very friendly though which makes it an ideal candidate for aquariums maintained by communities.

Just like the sucker which cleans the glass of the tank and the plants kept in them with the help of its mouth suitable to this job, the Labeo Bicolor also carries out similar responsibilities in the communal aquariums where they are kept. They thus are happy in communal waters but do not tolerate fishes from other families. Being a forager Labeo lives on algae and other foodstuff. Labeo is not fussy about the condition of water and makes sure the tank is sparkling clean at all times. One important thing to be noted though is that if one chooses to go in for this fish, he or she must make sure other fishes in the tank are those which can effectively adapt to the same living conditions. There are fishes that will easily adapt to acidy waters which are soft and there are those others which will adapt to alkaline waters which are hard. It is advisable to go through every detail regarding the nature and habits of this fish before going in for purchasing them for your aquarium.

One more breed of fishes which grow upto one and a half inches in size and feature olive or brown skins are the White Cloud Mountain Minnows or the Tanichthys Albonubes. These fishes have their origin in the White Cloud Mountain rivers in China and Canton. This fish has attractive stripes which goes all the way to the snout and roots of the caudal or the peduncle of the tail. Its adjusting nature and preference for all types of food stuff make the White Cloud Fish best suited for communal tanks. Water conditions can be neutral or hard for this species of fish. Ideal temperature would be about 50 degrees Fahrenheit, definitely not 70 degree fahrenheit. Though a lot of fishes of other species generally prefer a temperature of 80 degrees, the White Cloud Mountain are the cold water types. Males of this species are not as plump as their female counterpart.

Minnows
Breeding the White Cloud
If you have ever bred the Brachydanio, then you can breed the White Cloud Fish in the same way.Brachydanios including Rerio require you to line the bottom of the aquarium with pebbles of one and a half inch diameter. You must make sure water is not more than three inches deep. These fishes are happier in longer aquariums.

Fish Care – Aquarium Tips

Fish Care – Aquarium Tips

Aquarium Fish Care

Fish care changes depending on the type of fish you own. One of the first things to consider is if you have a salt water fish or fresh water fish. This distinct difference is important in supporting the life of your fish. With thousands of different species, fish are going to need different ways to live.

One of the most important things to do is balance the water. The water’s alkali is measured on a pH scale and is referred to as the water’s hardness many times. There are kits available to measure the alkalinity. Different fish require a different degree of hardness, so it’s important to have all the right tests to ensure proper surroundings. The water’s pH balance can change depending on magnesium or calcium in the water. There are also pH buffers available to help maintain the balance. If you find out the pH balance is wrong, you want to address the problem immediately.

Fish care is different with many of the most popular fish as well. However, they all have the same thing in common and that is low maintenance. Here are some of the more popular fish and what it takes to care for them.

1. Damsels: These saltwater fish are very aggressive. If you have too many of them, you could be looking at an empty fish tank because they don’t tend to get along with many other fish even of its own kind. Damsels are saltwater fish, so you are going to need a marine or reef tank to sustain them. The good thing about damsels is they are very tough fish. They can survive in some of the harshest conditions, but don’t test this out. Take care of your damsels. It’s recommended that you only put up to two in the same tank.

Some of the damsels to consider owning are the yellow-tailed or blue damsels. They are less aggressive and will be easier to maintain. Domino and three-striped damsels are the trouble makers.

2. Mollies: Mollies are freshwater fish but can live in saltwater. Mollies adapt to the saltwater, but prefer its natural state. These fish are popular because they can live in different pH. They are very resilient creatures and can live through many different water conditions. This is what makes them very desirable. Adapting fish to saltwater can be a long process. You start by keeping the fish in a bag of water and slowly drench it with saltwater in an eight-hour period.

3. Clown fish: These fish became extremely popular after the Disney movie Finding Nemo. Every child wants to get their Nemo for their tank. The good thing for parents is that clown fish are easy to take care of, but these fish can only stay in its own type of environment. Unlike mollies, they cannot adapt to something different. These fish are very protective and tend to typically keep well with fish of its own kind.

4. Shrimp: There are different kinds of shrimp people can own, but the most popular shrimp are the clean shrimps. They have a white and red stripe down the middle of their back. They are more popular because they are easy to maintain. However, these fish shouldn’t be put with too many other kinds of fish. You should put a maximum of four fish in a tank with these shrimp.

There are so many other fish and different things to learn about them. Read about how to maintain specific fish and ask the pet shop employees for tips on how to maintain your home aquarium. Fish are great pets to have, so take care of them and they will last you a long time.

Non Mechanical Fish Aquarium Supplies

There are many significant things to purchase that should be factored into your budget when you’re browsing for fish aquarium supplies. These are things that differ from the apparent equipment and fish. Maintaining safe and healthy water at all times will require several additives and substances which will need to be easily accessible. Exactly what you’ll require will depend on the variety of tank you’ll be using. If you’re taking care of salt water fish – you may want to pay extra attention to the following information as the difficulty will increase as opposed to raising fresh water fish.

First on the list is fish food and water conditioner which are the two most basic non-mechanical fish aquarium supplies. Obviously, fish need to eat just like we do in order to continue living. The water must remain a healthy environment for the fish to live – that will involve the use of an additive to remove the bad chlorine. For saltwater fish owners, special marine or reef salt may need to be contributed to the tank in order to sustain comfortable salt levels throughout the tank.

Medications and vitamins are among a multitude of other additives your fish aquarium supplies may include. If you want to add live plant life in your substrate there are a few extra things to remember such as buying special underwater fertilizers for your plants. To guarantee that you’ll have everything you need to decently uphold a well-conditioned tank, you should perform extensive research ahead of time. This will provide you the ability to correct problems inside your tank very efficiently if an examination were to reveal that something is off.

Aquarium Fish Care – 4 Basic Things Beginners Must Know

Aquarium Fish Care – 4 Basic Things Beginners Must Know

Presently there are around 20,000 types of fishes and to instruct on care for each of them is going to be a very hard task. Hence I have decided to help you out by giving you the basics in fish and tank care. Unlike animals with fur coats fishes do not have any protection. This is why the temperature of the water is so vital. If it is very high then the supply of oxygen would be affected and if it is too cold then too the health of the fishes would be in danger. Make sure you read the manual properly so that you can ensure the right gravity and temperature is maintained for healthy fish. For goldfishes you must keep the water temperature at 75 degree Fahrenheit. For tropical fishes keep the temperature of the water between 75 to 80 or 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

While buying the aquarium, make sure to buy a thermometer and also a heater to cater to different type of fishes. Like Goldfishes which can withstand low temperatures at some times.

1. How to measure water?

The measuring of water is done in pH, depending on the sourness of water and also on the different types of fishes you have. For saltwater fishes, the water should be measured from 7, 8 to 8.3 and for freshwater fish you should measure from 6.8 to 7.2. In case you should monitor the pH measurement of the water where as water is measured more ammonia will be produced. If the temperature of the water falls too low it could become harmful to the growth of bacteria and also for the gills of the fish. In order to maintain the pH balance in the fish water, you could also buy test kitsand buffers. Further, we will discuss how gravity and oxygen is measured in the water.

2. How much of oxygen is needed for fish?

Human beings, animals and even fishes require oxygen in order to survive. If there is no sufficient supply of oxygen to the brain then it will die and slowly the rest of the body too will collapse. Both air and water give the needed oxygen to the fish tanks. The oxygen level can be increased by the usage of air supply or pumps which gives the oxygen. The other thing that you can is keeping the water cool.

3. How to measure gravity?

The chemicals added to water is the basis of gravity. If the aquarium is supplied with unadulterated water the ionic gravity is 1.0 If the fish is a saltwater one the gravity level should not be more than 1.023. Anyhow, illnesses of saltwater fish can be reduced by keeping the water gravity level at 1.017. Freshwater fish or non-marine fish can benefit by adding a lesser volume of salt to the water, particularly to reduce stress. The gravity level can be maintained with the help of test kits and refactometers .

4. How are saltwater fish aquariums maintained?

This question is stressful as saltwater fish being marine creatures, their habitat and environments change consistently. It also depends on the kind of aquarium that is purchased to keep your fish. When a larger aquarium is purchased, maintaining saltwater fish is easy when you keep the environment stable. However if the saltwater fish is yet to be purchased, it has to be noted that Damsel, an aggressive salt water fish hardly mates with other fish.

To conclude, visit the internet to know more about fish care and aquariums , where you can get a wide range of information.

Tip: Damsel fishes are ideal for beginners as they require very little attention.

Setting Up Your Salt Water Aquarium for Success

It takes several key components to set up a successful salt-water aquarium to garner success. Correct PH levels, the right high bay lights and the right coral reef set up are all key components you’ll need to research to ensure a copasetic environment for your marine life.

The most important set up tip you can get is to gain as much information as you can concerning the proper PH levels for marine salt-water aquariums. No matter how pretty your set up is, if your water levels are out of control your marine life will not be alive for long. In general the larger the tank the less likely you are to have spikes in PH levels. The minimum suggested size for a marine tank is 30 gallons and preferably higher. Anything less than 30 gallons and you’ll spend as much time checking water quality as you do watching your fish. Maintaining proper salt levels will help to ensure you maintain a healthy environment for your under water world.

Lighting is also a major key in maintaining a healthy living environment for your marine life. Most people who want a well-balanced salt-water tank want some level of a coral reef. This is needed to sustain that balance. If you don’t want a reef then lighting is not as essential but if you do, then going with high bay lights as the systems will help you maintain the correct levels of UV for your aquarium. You can buy commercial hoods complete with lower quality ballasts and brackets or you can buy lighting systems designed to light! Most experienced reef owners will tell you that sit on top hoods pale in comparison to open tanks with high bay lighting that is suspended above the tank. It causes less heating issues and also acts more like the sun (in the fact that it’s farther above the water, not right on top of it.) Most suppliers can also help you with setting up daytime lighting and nighttime lighting. It’s been proven that marine life get just as much benefit from moonlight as they do sunlight. For some reefs, moonlight is even more important than sunlight.

Once you have your reef, lighting and PH in place you’ll need to focus on filtering. Freshwater aquariums require much less filtration than well balanced marine set ups need. Bacteria tanks are often employed to ensure the fish are getting the right amounts of bacteria. Skimmer filters and salt filters are also commonly used to ensure the conditions in the water are properly balanced. This is one of the largest costs of owning a salt-water set up and will also be one of the most labor-intensive projects for your tank. However as tedious as it may seem, proper filtration of the water is key to success.

Maintaining a marine tank will always be more labor intensive then a fresh water tank but you’ll rarely see anything in fresh water nature that compares to the majestic flow of marine life and coral reefs. The benefits out weigh the work involved in maintaining a reef tank.

Candle Holders – Containing the Light

Fire has been a constant companion of humanity for thousands of years. While today it is often seen as a destructive, or at the very least unnecessary element, in the dark past, fire was the only light that would shine through the night, keeping predators at bay, cooking the illness out of meat, and providing warmth and comfort to lost beings floating across the surface of the earth.

A fifty five gallon freshwater aquarium is a good choice when purchasing a new tank, if nothing else, simply because of its size. These tanks are large enough to accommodative a variety of fish, but still small enough to keep in tight spaces in the home or office. Your local retailer can assist you with specifics in purchasing, but here are some suggestions for the basics. Purchase an acrylic tank, because they are lighter in weight and easier to care for than glass aquariums. Also the visibility is better in an acrylic tank. If you don’t already have a stand or a suitable replacement, keep in mind that you will need to purchase one. You will need a heater for temperature control, and a thermometer for checking the water temperature. It will take approximately five bags of rock or other substrate to line the bottom of the tank. Choose a bright color to add some interest to the aquarium.

In addition, you will need to purchase a filter for the tank. Filters can be complicated. Do a lot a research to find out what type of filter is suggested for the fish that you choose. There are filters that go beneath the substrate in the bottom of the tank, as well as filters that attach to the side of the aquarium. They also vary greatly in price. It is not necessary to buy the most expensive filter when setting up a basic freshwater aquarium.

The aquarium will also need lighting. Again, based on personal preference you can keep it simple or get very technical. Most fish will respond nicely to a basic light that is simply turned on for a few hours each day. An aquarium should contain some form of plants for added interest. The plants serve a place for the fish to seek refuge and feel safe. There are many varieties of freshwater plants that would work nicely in a fifty five gallon aquarium. Just be sure to purchase an aquatic specific species. If you don’t want the hassle of live plants, plastic is always an option. They have come along way with synthetic plants. In most cases the fish may not even notice the difference, unless of course they try to eat them.

Once your tank is established and you are ready to add fish, choose your fish carefully. Start with hardy fish, such as live bearers, gouramis, barbs, and danios. These fish are hardy enough to handle higher nitrate levels in the tank. Allow about thirty days for these fish to become acclimated to the tank, before adding any new fish. It usually takes about thirty days for the symptoms of ich or other fish illnesses to show up. It is important to make sure that all existing fish are healthy before adding any new species. The transportation of new fish itself is stressful enough, without having to add disease to the situation. When purchasing fish, it is important to remember that a fifty five gallon aquarium can handle about fifteen to twenty small fish total. This will allow plenty of growth room for the fish.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/The Truth about Salt Water Aquarium Filters

When you set up a salt water aquarium filter then you will find that lots of things are involved in this. You will need various gadgets like a heater or a filter and also a test kit. You need all this if you want to maintain your salt water aquarium.

As everyone knows, fish are like normal human being, they eat and they pass out waste substances. Then through the process of nature, this waste turns into bacteria. Hence you need salt water aquarium filters if you want to clean out these germs. They also help you to get rid of elements which make the water dirty and hence they keep the entire aquarium safe for your pets.

When it comes to this filter you have two main types, the first is the external filtration system and the send one is called the internal one. You will find these filters at any sort of fish shop. But then the local pet shops usually don’t have these. Sometimes, even if they do they don’t have good quality ones.

So try and get them from the specialized shops. Now you should know a few things about these salt water aquarium filters before you buy them. Let’s start with the internal filters. Now these are basically used in those tanks where you have an internal tube. This tube is going to connect the water from the main tank to a sump tank which is present below.

The sump tank will be situated just below your main tank. The water in the fish tank will also be made to pass through a foam type thing. This foam will stop all types of bacteria and also unhealthy germs from getting accumulated. This way you can also filter the water.

After this the water will finally be pumped back into the main aquarium which is situated on the top. Now you will see that this process is a continuous one. The only defect of this system is that it is very noisy but then when it comes to effectiveness, it is very effective.

Then we have the external filter which is the most effective salt water filter available in the market. But then it also comes with a price tag. It is the most expensive one which is available as well.

But then the amount of money which you pay for this is actually worth it. This is something which is placed outside of your fish tank and it is just like the internal filtration system. Here there is a long black tube which is the filter and it is very silent and barely makes any noise and it is also very effective.
