The SETT is the world’s only 30 metre deep tank and is 5.5 metres wide with a balmy water temperature of 34C. What’s slightly odd is the fact that the surface is on the 10th Floor of a tower block while the bottom is pretty much at ground level. It’s a bit like diving in a space ship, everything is white and very well lit with depth markers at 5 metre intervals. You can see the surface clearly at every point

Using The Right Fish Tank Equipment

Are you new to the fine art of owning fish? Having your own fish aquarium is an exciting hobby that will teach you a lot about nature, but the key to proper fish care is using the right fish tank equipment. In order to keep fish alive and in their optimum health condition, you need to accommodate them by producing an environment that mimics what they are used to as closely as possible. This means that their water condition, temperature and surroundings must all match what they are used to. This also means that using the right fish tank equipment is absolutely vital if you want to keep your fish healthy and give them the quality of life that they deserve.

Using the right fish tank equipment means implementing all of the following pieces of equipment in your aquarium set up:

- A proper filtration system.
- A heater.
- A thermometer.
- Aquarium plants or Airstone.
- The right Décor.

Filtration- is a necessary part of keeping your aquarium properly equipped. Filtration pulls the water through, filtering out impurities, waste and other bits and releasing clean water back into the aquarium. Not only should you have the fight filter in your aquarium, but you have to make sure that you are using the right filter media as well. Most filters use charcoal to purify the water before releasing it back into the aquarium, sans waste and debris.

Heater – Most tropical and salt water fish prefer warmer waters. Goldfish are usually more than happy to be in colder waters, but if you want to keep your tropical fish happy, keep them warm. Most heaters for aquariums are set up so that they only click on when the water needs a boost of warmth. Make sure that you also have a thermometer installed inside your aquarium so that you can make sure that the right temperature is being reached at all times. Different fish species have different temperature requirements, so keep that in mind when setting your heater.

Aquarium Plants and Airstones – These two pieces of equipment are not necessarily vital to the health of your fish, but they are nice and helpful additions. Plants and airstones both introduce oxygen into the water and while fish do not need to breathe the air we breathe, they do need the oxygen in the water in order to survive. Airstones release oxygen into the water by way of bubbles, and plants naturally produce oxygen as part of their normal life cycle. So while not exactly necessary, these props are still worthwhile additions to your aquarium setting.

Décor – Some people would tell you that décor is not a vital part of any aquarium setting, but some fish do require it.

For example, African Cichlids are aggressive fish that take up territories in an aquarium. If you plan to house numerous Cichlids in the same aquarium, giving them different territories and boundaries is a good way to keep them from harming one another. Another less than vital aspect of the aquarium setting, but still worthwhile if you want to create a safe haven for your fish.

Choosing a Glass Or an Acrylic Fish Tank

What are the benefits of acrylic fish tanks?

Using acrylic to make fish tanks changed the aquarium keeping hobby for everybody. In the 1800′s, fish tanks were mainly metal boxes with one side made out of glass. Aquarists could only keep fish from their own region because they were the only ones available, and they had to be fresh water fish because salt water corroded the metal frame that held the panes together.

When silicone adhesive appeared into the picture in the 1960′s, metal frames ceased to exist and gave way to glass and people were able to keep salt water fish in their aquariums.

Then came acrylic. Acrylic is greatly flexible and made aquariums break-proof, unlike their glass counterparts. With glass fish tanks there is always the danger of shattering the glass if stroke with a heavy object, creating a big mess of water and fish all over the place. Acrylic tanks don’t run this danger

The possibilities of design with acrylic are endless. You can turn anything from an old television set to a gum ball machine into a fish tank.

Acrylic fish tanks are very lightweight. Especially if you compare them to glass tanks, acrylic tanks are very light. Of course, when you put the water in it, the tank is going to be very heavy, but the transportation of the tank will be much easier. Acrylic tanks are also very clear. The visibility of the fish will be much better than with glass.

Another advantage of acrylic tanks is the variety of shapes you can find! Bow front aquariums are my favorite. They look so much nicer then regular rectangular tanks. You can get the tiniest tank for your favorite Betta fish or a gigantic aquarium for your wall. I personally like to buy everything separate, but you can purchase a starter kit that has everything from gravel, plastic plants, lights and filters.

Obviously, acrylic aquariums also have their problems.

Acrylic can scratch easier than glass. You have to be very careful when cleaning your tank and use only supplies made especially for acrylic. Scrubbers have to be made of rubber or plastic and never metal. Be very careful not to pick up a piece of gravel with your sponge and scratch the surface of the tank with it.

However, if you accidentally scratch your acrylic tank, there is no need to despair. Acrylic tanks can be repaired. There are acrylic repair kits available.

When you get the occupants for your new tank

Only make sure to buy your fish from reputable specialty fish stores. Fish bought at regular pet shops normally carry diseases and won’t last you long. And, it’s always good to be able to ask questions about their care from someone knowledgeable. Look at the tanks. There shouldn’t be any dead fish floating around. Choose the most energetic fish you see and have the employee give you the one you choose. After all, that fish will be your pet for many years to come.

In all there are more than 20,000 types of fish. There is virtually no way possible anyone can outline how to care for fish and aquariums in a single group of articles. Since aquariums, rather water and fish produce toxins you will want to learn about such toxins in aquarium and fish care.

Aquariums are containers which provide fish a habitat filled with water. Aquariums are often shaped like boxes, which fish and related aquatic animals, as well as plants are stored. The water supplies oxygen and/or air for fish to breathe, which means the water must be constantly maintained in order for the fish and plants to survive. Temperature is important as well, since unlike furry critters, fish cannot control their essence of temperature. Dehumidifiers and humidifiers can help you maintain a balanced temperature in the air, which will affect water. Ultimately, you have fish gauges, which help you to monitor the temperatures in water.

In addition, fish in tanks or aquariums are subject to bacteria and toxins. Since, bacteria and toxins are produced faster in aquariums for the reason that unlike land, fish in water do not have natural fighters against such contaminants. With this in mind, we see that fish require high eminence of water to survive. In addition, aquariums often tank salt water creatures, as well as fresh water fish. It is important that you understand the difference and how to maintain water supply for both species. Still, the two are similar in comparison as far as fish care.

How do I eliminate toxins?

First, you must understand toxins in order to eliminate them. Fish will produce a degree of toxins; as well, water supplies produce its volume of toxins, such as copper, metals, chlorine, etc. Toxins spent by fish are wasted items coming from the fish life-sustaining chemicals, known as metabolism. Fish then produce pungent gases, which are colorless and highly water soluble.

Water supply often has CHLORAMINE or Chlorine combined, which are additives to fish tanks that work to purify the water. The chemicals combine to eliminate or minimize the growth of bacteria. Bacteria, develops in water pipes, drinking fountains, ground water, etc.

Now to answer your question, you will need a test kit to maintain toxic waste. You can use the kit to test the waters, thus making sure that the aquarium is not overly contaminated. You will also need filters, and pre-treatment water to balance your aquarium.

How do I find pre-treated water?

Water mixed with 1 milligram of sodium THIO-sulfate, includes ten gallons of fresh water combined with 1% sodium will remove toxins such as chlorine. In addition, you can purchase products, which include chemicals that will remove CHLORAMINE and Chlorine respectively. You have the option of removing toxins from aquariums by exposing the tank to air, which allows circulation of air to penetrate the aquarium. Furthermore, you can combine gas converting it to liquids, which charge, or activates carbons. The carbon dioxide will bubble, which removes toxins as well. Using your test kit you will know if the tank has metals, or coppers in the water. If your water supply has copper and metal you will need to purchase spring water, or purified water to remove toxins. Ultimately you can purchase hepa products, which include water purifiers to connect to your tap water. The product will eliminate metal, copper, and other contaminates, thus purifying your water supply.

No matter what you choose, as long as you are able to keep it clean and the fish well fed, you will not have a problem. Always make sure you clean them only with water and that the fish are taken out with care.

Deemed as Reef Safe

Experienced reef keepers will tell you that most species of the long legged hermies are deemed as reef safe. It is best to buy the smaller varieties because they are less lightly to destroy the coral, eat other fish or upset the finely balanced structure of your tank. Instead they will sit comfortably with other species and varieties of marine life in perfect harmony.

Sand sifters

Certain types of these particular hermies are known as sand sifters. This means that they will scour the bottom of the tank where the substrate sits and pick out detritus, other fallen debris and any uneaten food that fall to the bottom of the tank. They are even known to eat faecal matter. This means that they kind of act as a biological sand filter system.

Vacuum cleaners

These particular hermies are very good vacuum cleaners. This means that they swim through the water hoovering up unwanted particles thus keeping it clean and free from any crud such as red slime algae that might develop over a period of time

Food finders

As the title suggests, these hermies are natural scavengers. This means that they will scour your reef tank for food particles and will find their own source of food. So you do not have to feed them very often. Just be aware that if the algae within your reef tank dries up, you will need to make sure that you supplement their diet by giving your pet hermies a little dried seaweed, as this contains all the nutrients they need to be fit and healthy.

As you can see here are some of the reasons why long legged salt water hermit crabs are an excellent addition to your reef tank. They are masters at keeping your tank or aquarium at the right natural balance that will in turn support all the other marine life living within it. They also provide a fun element to your aquatic paradise as they constantly change their shells. Finally their lifespan can be quite lengthy, so you will not have to keep replacing them every few years. So if you are about to set up your reef tank for the first time then the aquatic hermies should be the first on your list every single time.

Bristleworms are a kind of extremely fast multiplying worms, which generally infest aquariums, salt water tanks and create problems for the other aquatic lives which live in the water tank. It is surprising to know that these bristleworms can grow as long as twenty four inches. These worms find a way to survive in the salt water tanks by feeding off on the leftover food and little crustaceans. Even though people try to catch these worms they are extremely deceptive it not at all easy to catch them that easily. Bristleworms move extremely swift and fast, they can ideally be seen only in darkness with the help of a red light. Although it is a very difficult process to identify the brislteworms and to eradicate easily, you must take the necessary steps which you practically can take to try and eradicate them early once are aware any early symptoms or signs of their existence.

There are certain steps which are required be followed to get rid of bristleworms form a salt water tank, here are they:

1. Determine if bristleworms are actually present in your salt water tank by checking your tank at night time. Look out for rocks as well as crevices in the salt water tank when there is absolute darkness, or by using a flash red light around that area. You would need to purchase a red bulb in order to put in a flashlight which you would able to purchase any hardware or electrical store near you.

2. Try to get a small plastic storage container which has a good light lid which can be fastened. Ensure that the container which you have got is opaque and not at all transparent so that the food in the container is totally invisible to the bristleworms until it stays inside.

3. Insert little amount of shrimp meat which is well cooked, raw fish roe, scallop meat, raw clam meat, raw mussel meat or pieces of raw fish which is edible onto the container. You can put a any type of food which is mentioned above or even put a mixture of some of the food. You do not need to put large quantities of food; just a pea size would be more than enough for the bristleworms.

4. Make holes in the containers which are large enough for the bristleworms to squeeze through them. Make sure the holes in the form of an “x” shaped cross and remove any sort of plastic which is cut out.

5. Immerse the container onto the salt water talk and let it fill with water. Be sure that the container is completely sealed with its lid and then drop it on to the location where you found the bristleworms with the red light earlier.

6. Leave container of a day like that and check it next day. In all probably bristleworms would gone in to eat to eat the meat or fish which you had kept in the container, as the edges of the holes are quit sharp they would not able to come out. If you repeat the process frequently you can easily eradicate the worms.

Choosing the between all the various salt water fish tank filtration systems can be confusing to say the least. But, before you choose your specific system, there are a few points you must know no matter which system you choose. Keep in mind filtration is a very important part of your tank, so don’t rush through this step.

In natural habitats, the fish have an ample areas in which to live. In your tank, they are confined to a relatively small quantity of water. In your tank, waste products can quickly build up and spell disaster. That’s where the filter comes in.

Four factors have a huge impact on the success of your tank, and your filtration system. You must have an adequate biological base, the appropriate choice of animals, not over-populate, and don’t over feed. Get one of these factors wrong, and you most likely will have problems with your saltwater tank.

Biological filtration is the most important sector of salt water fish tank filter systems. The biological filters are living organisms within your tank. They consume oxygen and waste material within your tank. It’s not something you can add. They will occur naturally within your saltwater fish tank.

Mechanical Filtration

The second type of filtration for your tank is mechanical filtration. This is where you choose the type of salt water filter system you will use in your new tank.

Mechanical filtration strains the solid particles from your tank water. It will not remove solids trapped by gravel, or other items within your tank. A good mechanical filter traps enough solids to keep your water clear, without becoming clogged frequently.

Smaller openings catch finer particles and are clogged
faster than a larger opening. Keep this in mind as you choose your mechanical filtration system.

Types of Mechanical Filters

For years, the corner filter has been the least expensive and most used type of salt water fish tank filtration systems. These clear plastic boxes sit inside the tank. An air stone bubbles air through an airlift tube, which forces water through a bed of filter floss mechanically filtering the water.

Today there are better methods,that don’t take up space, look nicer, and perform well.

Power filters are used by many. You’ll find many styles of power filters. The most common hangs on the back of the tank. A siphon tube pulls water from the tank into the filter box and passes the water though a mechanical filter. An internal pump returns the filtered water into the aquarium. Power filters come in many sizes suited for small to large aquariums

Under-gravel filters work by slowly passing water through the gravel on the bottom, which sits on top of a perforated plate. The water pumped with an airlift, with bubbles air lifting the water in a vertical tube attached to the filter plate. One problem is that the gravel clogs up with waste creating a health risk for your fish.

Sponge filters are an efficient,cheap form of biological filtration. Water is forced through porous foam by air bubbling through an airlift tube. Water flowing though the sponge allows the growth of a colony of beneficial bacteria that neutralizes toxic ammonia.

Chemical Filtration

Chemical filtration removes dissolved wastes from aquarium water. The most popular chemical filtration is the carbon filter method. Your water is filtered through gas activated carbon. The best GAC for filtering water is made from coal and is
